More Unusual Symptoms

How Dare You Give Women a Choice!

Dear Sir, I can hardly believe the audacity of this article that I have read [quoting me] "swayed by anti-implant lobbyists and anecdotal reports equating ruptured implants with black magic" one would suspect that you are secretly a plastic surgeon, but more realstically [sic] you are probably an extremely ignorant man who would make his wife get these for your enjoyment, not caring of her health. The fact is, our government had a court case and a group of scientists who showed enough proof to not only take them off the market but to also make a giant tax-paying-company [sic] go out of business and that ruling should stand. Best of luck looking at the saline fake boobs with the hard seam – that's really what it comes down to for you isn't it?

What you wrote was extremely swayed [sic] and incorrect and should never have been published under the title of "Guest Commentary" but should be published under "ravings of a boob-hungry man". Sir, it insences [sic] me that you could write with such ignorance; If [sic] you would like to read a REAL article written by a true writer check this out from the Economist – you can find the entire article online.

"Look! I had my implants removed!"

Dear Ms. Benusis:

I don't know what century you're living in, but most men these days don't "make" their wives do anything. Did you know that women even have the vote now! If my wife wanted implants, I would say the decision is hers and advise that she get silicone ones because they are much more natural-looking and feeling. That has nothing to do with any seams on the implants but rather the sloshing and rippling that comes with the saline variety. In the event, the breast implant activists have tried to get those yanked as well. Like you, they insist that other women have a choice in the shape of their bodies. And like you, they don't understand (or wouldn't care if they did), that most women who get implants have very small breasts and are simply looking to move up to a B-cup.

Pamela Anderson is very much the exception. Not incidentally, Ms. Anderson was roundly congratulated by those such as you when she announced she had her implants removed. You people didn't seem to notice that they had actually grown larger.)

There was no "ruling" in the Dow Corning breast implant case and the company didn't go out of business, it filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is still operating. The company settled because it knew that as large as the settlement was, the mere cost of litigating against so many lawyers would be more than the settlement regardless if it kept winning one case after another.

Further, as a settlement it does stand – regardless of how much new evidence has come in that those implants did no harm. On the other hand, the government had no "court case;" it sued nobody. As I explained, the FDA commissioner took implants off the market for augmentation purposes (leaving them for post-mastectomy reconstruction) despite the advice of two different science panels.

Yes, I'm a breast man.

Thanks for the citation to a popular journal from eight years ago, but I'd rather get my material directly from medical journals and reports of scientific bodies like the Institute of Medicine.

As far as being "boob-hungry," I must say my favorite part of a roasted chicken is the breast so I guess you have me there. Now run along to your "I hate women with big breasts!" rally.

Sincerely,
Michael Fumento

I have read the article you wrote about activists causing alarm among women who want silicone breast implants.

[228 words omitted in which she describes how, while undergoing cancer surgery, she was given silicone implants without her knowledge or consent. Right.]

I developed lupus like [sic] symptoms but knew nothing about Systemic Lupus Erythematosus [sic] (SLE). After exposing my body to intense UV radiation in a tanning bed, I fainted at the wheel of my car and caused a near fatal [sic] head on [sic] collision on 4-8-91. My left tibia and fibula were open fractures and I bled out at the scene. The leg bones did not heal for 6 years so I spent that time in a wheelchair, getting sicker and sicker each day. I was diagnosed with numerous disease processes [Disease processes? Is that like "processed cheesy food-like substance"?] at the Arizona Rheumatology Center, all attributed to my implants.

[261 words omitted.]

Some people smoke cigarettes but don't get lung cancer. That doesn't mean cigarettes are safe. The same truths apply to silicone implants, whether they be breast, dental, TMJ, chin, knee and hip replacements or penile. They should be banned from the market forever. [Other than breast implants, none of these use silicone gel and several don't even use hardened silicone.]

Angela
Oklahoma City, OK

Dear Angela:

Thanks. I'll add sun-tanning, near-fatal car accidents, and bones that won't heal to the list of symptoms caused by silicone implants.

Sincerely,
Michael Fumento

hatemail38.html

Another victim of silicone breast implants.

Your response was much too snide. Must you add insult to injury? FYI, suntanning [sic] is not a symptom caused by silicone implants. It is an activity and it will cause major organ/system shutdown if you have systemic lupus symptoms. And major organ/system shutdown CAN cause a near fatal head-on collision. My orthopedic surgeon was as shocked as I was that, after 6 years in a wheelchair, 15 months after my ruptured implants were removed and the goop was scraped off my ribs, my leg fractures healed. He told me "[that] my autoimmune system was so busy trying to fight the damage in my chest, it couldn't devote any attention to the healing of leg bones." I've talked to all the proprietors of suntanning [sic] salons in my city and they are totally in the dark about the effects on women whose silicone implants have caused them lupus-like symptoms.

Angela

Dear Angela:

I'm delighted that your orthopedic surgeon is also an expert in autoimmune illnesses, even to the point of referring to non-existent "autoimmune systems." You don't find too many doctors with that dual discipline. I'm glad he also didn't make himself a slave to the medical literature, which indicates no connection between silicone implant ruptures and lengthened bone-healing time. I'm also glad he never heard of the logical fallacy of post hoc, ergo propter hoc (after this, therefore because of this.) Then it might have occurred to him that the healing had nothing to do with the removal of the implants.

Finally, that was an excellent pun about tanning salons being in the dark. But as for salons being unaware that tanning poses a special risk to women with implants, I must say I find that quite believable for the very logical reason that the women are at no special risk.

Sincerely,
Michael Fumento

It is obvious you have made yourself a slave to the literature offered by manufacturers of implants and the surgeons who implant them because of their greed and the lack of long term implant studies [sic], so I suggest that you go right ahead and get your penile implant and while you're at it, you might also consider a brain transplant because the one you have is seriously lacking any common sense and logic capability.

Angela

Dear Angela,

What you mean is that I adhere to the published medical literature, a basic understanding of human physiology, and logic. You use "common sense" in the usual fashion of somebody whose back is to the wall, meaning "whatever I say." I don't see any common sense in ignoring science in favor of black magic. Finally, whoever told you I was in favor of a penile implant (used for erectile dysfunction) is quite mistaken.

Sincerely,
Mi

"You can't handle the truth!"

chael Fumento

[627 words omitted.]

If you cannot understand the above and still believe the propaganda you are dispensing on behalf of the implant manufacturers and/or plastic surgeons, then you wouldn't believe a certified copy of a death certificate I have showing the cause of a retired nurse's death to have been caused by: "1. Ischemic blood supply [No such thing. Ischemia refers to a condition in which the blood flow (and thus oxygen) is restricted to a part of the body.], due to or caused by 2. Autoimmune Disease [sic], due to or caused by "Silicone [sic] Breast [sic] Implants [sic]" and therefore, it is a waste of my time and energy to continue to try to educate you with the truth which is documented in medical records, police reports and a death certificate. The simple fact is, "You can't handle the truth!" ...and that makes you an ignorant jerk who chooses to remain that way the remainder of your life.

Angela

Dear Angela:

A doctor can put whatever he likes on a death certificate, including "massive hemorrhage due to vampirism." I like your Jack Nicholson impersonation from "A Few Good Men" but I think your name-calling, your attacking my motives as financial with no evidence, your Shouting at Me indicate that you seem to have problems interpreting reality. I have corresponded with you long enough and you will please henceforth keep those problems from cluttering my inbox.

Sincerely,
Michael Fumento

You Have the Power, Luke!

I have no idea who you are; however, I have just read the article that you wrote. [Apparently I've only written one article.] Are you calling us liars? We have done our own research. Millions of women cannot be wrong. These devices rupture at a very high rate. I have had two sets of silicone breast implants, and both were grossly ruptured. My life has been destroyed because of people like you. I'm a lady, a mother and a good wife. I have lost all quality of life because a plastic surgeon lied to me in 1974. This is one of the biggest cover-ups ever, and we know that you know the truth. Please, tell me where you got your information? You have been misinformed.

Did you know that people like you who write these unrelenting articles regarding the safty [sic] of breast implants are destroying more lives [sic]. The IOM [Institute of Medicine] did not allow many very good researchers to be part of their study. They knew that if they allowed some one [sic] like Dr. Harbutt's study to be viewed it could cause some good researchers to have questioned the report.

This is all about money and power. Are you in this for money or the power? I would love to have you in our home for just one day. We would treat you with kindness; however, we would educate you on the real problems with breast implants. Have you read my story? Please read my story at [It's written in agate type and goes on for 7,200 words. I'll spare you.], my story gets worse. I will continue to write my story as soon as I'm well enough. If you are interested I have all of my original medical records from 1974.

Please read the article below and see if you could add something that might help us to understand why you have taken sides with the plastic surgeons and the manufacturers. We need people like you on our side because you seem to be extreamily [sic] influential.

I wish that I had your power....Lea

Dear Lea,

Last I heard millions of women had voluntarily received silicone implants, not complained about them. Pray where did you get that number? And tell me, at what rate do the implants rupture? If your life has been destroyed, it is because of people like you. Don't blame me for your problems. It's not fair to me and it won't help you. I have been writing about implants since 1992 including a monograph with many citations. You'll find all this material on my website at http://www.fumento.com/suimplant.html. I found your friend Dr. Lardbutt on PubMed. He's published a handful of papers on the toxic effects of various metals, but there was nothing on implants. Then I found one on the Web where he's blaming trace platinum in implants for causing asthma. Going back to PubMed, I found no other articles linking implants and asthma. Thus Hardbutt came up with what scientists and doctors call "unverifiable results," meaning they're useless until someone else comes finds the same thing. Finally, insofar as I don't have a lot of money and I'm really not sure how much power I have either, you'll have to choose C): In this to spread the truth.

Sincerely,
Michael Fumento

A Baying Wolf

Mr. Fumento,

When you have walked in the shoes of any woman who had silicone breast implants for more than 10 -15 years, ruptured, for God only knows how many years, then you will have the right to criticize women ill from the poisoning of [a list of chemicals allegedly found in silicone implants.]

[177 words omitted.]

Perhaps, one day when you grow up, instead of writing propaganda for $$$$, you will have learned the lesson to do some research first, then "Write only about things of which you have personal knowledge"..Maybe you'd like to have penile, or testicular implants, wear them for at least 10 years??? Then you'd have a personal knowledge of the horrors of Silicone [sic] Implants!! [sic]

Carolyn Wolf

Dear Ms. Wolf,

Actually, I didn't write the piece for $$$$, $$$, or even $$ or $. If you have any evidence otherwise, please proffer it or shut your muzzle. I presented a large amount of research, as you well know. But your following statement says research isn't good enough, one must only write about that which one has personally experienced.

That means as a health writer I cannot write about cancer, heart disease, AIDS, 99.99 percent of drugs, 99.9 percent of surgeries . . . Gee, I pretty much can't write about anything. No doubt you would like it that way, but my readers would tend to disagree with you. Lady, you're just howling at the moon.

Sincerely,
Michael Fumento

I Hate Implants So Much I Keep Getting Them

Dear Mr. M. Fumento:

[You wrote:] "In fact, silicone from a ruptured implant usually stays put because built-up body tissue 'encapsulates' it. When gel does migrate, it remains localized."

I beg to differ with you. In my case I did not have rupture, but I did have gel bleed. It did slide down to over the rib area where I had to have the "foreign material" tumors removed. [If it's foreign material, it's not a tumor.]

I had the original Cronin implant when I was 22 years old (1968), after a bilateral mastectomy. It had the mesh on the back and had to cut off my chest wall (1976), taking part of the chest wall muscle.

I also had the Meme implant, which was taken off the market because it released toxic material that could cause cancer. And in spite of the mastectomy, I developed cancer.

I have had a total of 15 implants and expanders. I always believed my doctor that they were safe, new and improved, and would not get hard. Unfortunately the last one on my right side developed necrosis [Sorry, only living tissue can develop necrosis – though to hear some of the implant horror stories, they are living tissue.] and popped out, through the skin, on its own.

If you were at the FDA hearing you would have seen the picture. It was shown when I gave testimony.

I have lived 35 years with breast implants. I know first hand [sic] what can happen. I don't claim all of my ills are caused by implants. But I do believe they are unsafe to put in the human body.

I did have many ills reported to my doctor since 1969. Unexplained illnesses. So many "like" illnesses. MS like [sic], lupus like [sic]. These are [sic] all documented long before 1992. I have been on SSD [Social Security Disability] since 1987. I have also been Dx [diagnosed] with Parkinson's. I believe that there is some correlation to the implants and the gel bleed and the poly foam that dissolved into my body. Don't know how, or to what extent, but its [sic] been in there. Silicone.

There are some women who have had breast implants who have no health problems.

Does this mean they are safe?

There are also many women who smoke cigarettes who don't get lung cancer. Does this mean that cigarettes are safe?

Why do you come down hard on the women who claim they are sick from implants?

I believe the bottom line is money, the manufactures [sic] and for the doctors who perform the surgery. All ready [sic] there is infighting between the board certified [sic] plastic surgeons and the certified cosmetic surgeons, because the FDA recommend [sic] the only board certified [sic] plastic surgeons can use the silicone implant.

It should not be up to silicone implanted women to prove they [sic] harmful, but up to the manufactures [sic], not taxpayers, to prove they are safe.

Sincerely,
[omitted] Nye

Dear Ms. Nye:

It's nice to hear from a woman who actually testified, because it so nicely illustrates what I wrote about those testimonies. You claim to have had 15 implants or expanders, each one its own nightmare, yet you kept on getting them. Were you really that naïve that the next implant would be better? Or is that number as fictitious as "like" illnesses? The reason alleged victims of "silicone gel poisoning" or whatever you want to call it keep referring to having a "lupus-like illness" or "MS-like" illness is because no doctor diagnosed them either with lupus or MS or any other real disease. The only real illness is psychosomatic. You imagine you have something similar to lupus so it becomes "lupus-like." I don't believe I'm "coming down hard" on women who claim implants made them ill with non-existent illnesses, I'm simply saying that we must discount non-existent illnesses and not give credibility to those who claim to have them. You're right that it should be up to the manufacturers to show they're safe, while apparently not realizing that this is the FDA's position as well. And yet when the manufacturers do pay for the studies the charge is: "These were paid for by industry!" I don't believe in telling companies to go into a round room and sit in a corner and I don't believe psychogenic illness should be used to block women from having access to a product many obviously wish to receive.

Sincerely,
Michael Fumento

I have been told that you are a cruel and stupid man. Perhaps I truly am naive to think that you might listen to people who take the time to write to you, rather than lecture them about how ridiculous you think they are.

Dear Ms. Nye:

Yes, I cruelly and stupidly only listen to those with something to say. When the squirrels start chattering outside the window, I close it. I'm not saying you don't have problems; I'm just saying they have nothing to do with silicone implants.

Murder, She Wrote

HI MY NAME IS JEAN,

I WOULD LIKE FOR SOME OF YOU MEN TO HAVE SILICON [sic] IN YOUR BODY FOR A PERIOD OF TIME AS I DID. I CAN'T BELIEVE SOMEONE THAT KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT WHAT THEY [sic] ARE TALKING ABOUT COULD SAY THE SILICON [sic] IS SAFE. SILICON [sic] WAS A NIGHT MARE [An adult female horse only ridden after dark.] FOR ME. AS ALL DOCTORS OR MOST OF THEM DO THIS FOR THE MONEY NOT OUR SAFETY OR WELFARE. [sic] I WAS TOLD IN 1989 THAT IF I PUT THE SILICON [sic] IMPLANTS IN AFTER I HAD A MASECTOMY THAT THEY [The implants?] WERE 99.9% SURE THEY WOULD NEVER LEAK AND KNOWING WHAT I KNOW NOW NOTHING THAT IS MAN MADE [sic] IS THAT SURE. I WAS VERY ILL FOR YEARS WITH DOCTORS SAYING I HAD SCAR TISSUE AND NOTHING [sic] THEY COULD DO. AT ONE POINT THEY EVEN LOOKED AT ME LIKE I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT AND WAS JUST COMPLAINING. [No? Really!] AFTER YEARS OF EVERYTHING HAPPENING TO MY BODY AND BEING TOLD MY IMMUNE SYSTEM WAS GONE I FOUND A DOCTOR THAT CARED AND SENT ME TO A PLASTIC SURGEON THAT [sic] SAID ALL HE COULD DO WAS TAKE THEM OUT. THE HOSPITAL WOULD ALWAYS SAY THE MAMM'S [sic] WERE FINE AND EVERYTHING WAS OK BUT WHEN I WAS OPENED UP THE PS SAID HE HAD NEVER IN IS [sic] CAREER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE IT. THE IMPLANTS"SILICON" [Sic, and why the quotes?] HAD LEAKED ALL THROUGH MY RIB CAGE AND HE SCRAPED FOR EIGHT HOURS TO GET WHAT HE COULD OUT.HE [sic] SAID MY RIBS WERE COVERED WITH SILICON. [sic] THE POCKETS LOOKED LIKE PLASTIC THAT HAD LAID OUT FOR YEARS AND CRACKED.I [sic] HAVE HAD MIGRAINES, TWO KINDS OF ARTHRITIS,MY [sic] IMMUNE SYSTEM IS GONE,SKIN CANCERS OVER A HUNDRED [sic]. RASH ALL OVER MY BODY, NO ENERGY AT ALL,SO [sic] HOW CAN YOU SAY THESE IMPLANTS ARE SAFE WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE A CLU [sic] WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT BUT BELIEVE ME I DO. [sic] ALL THESE INNOCENT PEOPLE THAT I TALK TO SAY WE [sic] ARE TOLD THEY ARE SAFE AND ALL THE PS TELLS THEM IS HOW THEY FEEL LIKE THE REAL THING AND REALLY CONVINCES THE WOMEN THEY ARE SAFE. YOU AND I BOTH KNOW IT IS A MONEY GAME. DOCTORS GET RICH AT THE EXPENCE [sic] OF INNOCENT WOMEN. SHAME ON YOU.IF [sic] THEY ARE PUT ON THE MARKET AGAIN ALL YOU PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE TO PUT SILICON [sic] IN YOUR BODY AND SEE HOW YOU REACT TO THAT. YOU WOULD NEVER DO IT WOULD YOU. Large silicon breast implant

Dear Jean,

Even had I not a clue as to what I'm talking about, at least I would know that "silicon" is what computer chips are made with while "silicone" is the gel inside breast implants. If you have silicon in your body, you're either the bionic woman or a robot. For some reason I find myself skeptical that you've really had over a hundred skin cancers. It's not just that there's nothing in the medical literature associating skin cancer with silicone implants, it's that after having over 100 skin cancer excisions you wouldn't have any skin left. As to your immune system being "gone," there have been people such as those with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), also known as bubble boy disease, but without complete isolation they quickly die. They don't have the time to write long bizarre letters ALL IN UPPER CASE. As to plastic surgeons inserting implants for money, I suppose they should be giving away their services. After all, implants are so important that we should all be able to obtain them free of charge or at least for no cost beyond that of the implant itself. Finally, I am neither the FDA nor the FDA panel. It is the FDA panels that have repeatedly voted to allow use of silicone implants for purposes beyond replacement of post-mastectomy breast tissue. Please call the cops on them.

Sincerely,
Michael Fumento

[Insert your own "sics."]

you are a very arrogant person mike, and you don't have a clu what you are talking about!!!!. i am smart enough to know you are very un educated on silicon. youe brain isn't functioning very well if you say i have not lost my immune system and i haven't had the cancers. as for your info. they were pre cancers caused by the silicon and you ignorant people don't want to admit to the fact silicon is doing that to our bodies but i am wasting my time on people like you and the doctors that are only out for their own welfare. god bless you , you really need it jean

Dear Jean,

Your first message was all in capitals, your second all lower-case. You still can't spell "silicone." And a cancer is not the same as a "pre-cancer," by which apparently you mean "a pre-cancerous condition." This is an admission you did not have cancer, just as someone referring to having a "lupus-like" disease is admitting she didn't have lupus. Finally, I suspect that with anything you do you're wasting your time. It just so happens that in this case you're wasting mine as well.

Sincerely,
Michael Fumento

[Do your own "siccing" again.]

Mike,

yes i am waistig my time on an ignorant person like you.

i know what i have and i don't need your ignorant answers to tell me.i was asked to write to you and see just how ignorant you really were and guess what, they were right so please don't use up any more of your time with dumb talk. i do have more to do but i got my point across to you or you wouldn't have answered at all. i did have breast cancer and i did have silicon implants that leaked and i think you have got the point.

Jean,

I do get the point. You had silicone implants and they leaked. For the rest of your life you will blame any and all medical problems you have (psychosomatic or organic) on that leakage. Insofar as most medical ills even in this day and age don't receive a proper diagnoses, you may consider yourself lucky that you always have the answers even before the questions arise.

You're right; even though my column was only 700 words long I was obligated to present every study ever done on both biotech food and the health effects of mycotoxins. A Bitter Blossom

It makes me so sad to see such obvious shill corporate whoring.

Please read this and take it to heart – YOU HAVE NO CREDIBILITY.

[Quoting me.]

"Globally, according to the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications,"

Oh really? A source?

"ISAAA is funded by a donor support group consisting of public and private sector institutions. Some of its supporters include AgrEvo, Monsanto Co., Novartis Seeds, Cargill Seeds, Dow AgroSciences, Schering AG, and Gemeinschaft fur technische [sic] Zusammenarbeit.

"A 2003 National Center for Food and Agricultural Policy Study covering 36 states"

Gee. http://www.lobbywatch.org/profile1.asp?PrId=94&page=N

As for your attempt to befuddle your readers with tales of fumonisin dangers, the FDA has issued guildelines [sic] for safe production of organic corn.

http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/fumongu2.html

As for you and your organization, I read this and get sick.

"Based in Indianapolis, IN, the "institute's corporate funding ... includes Monsanto, DuPont, Dow-Elanco, Sandoz, Ciba-Geigy, ConAgra, Cargill, and Procter & Gamble." (Stauber, John and Sheldon Rampton. Trust Us, We're Experts. New York: Penguin Putnam, 2001.)"

Please take a long look at yourself in the mirror. You are a distortion artist at best, a liar at worst. How do you sleep at night?

Yes, I've used ad hominems in my letter to you – a bad way to argue. Your entire purpose in life is ad-hominem [sic].

Jeff Oliver angryflower@[omitted]

Dear Jeff:

What kind of an angry flower are you, a geranium? Geraniums stink, as did your nasty little presentation.

The full statement for which I cited ISAAA as a source was, "Globally, according to the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications, biotech acres planted have grown almost 50-fold since 1996. They now cover the equivalent of 40 percent of the U.S. land area." In other words, I relied on them for nothing more than how much land is plowed under with biotech crops. Why is it so inconceivable that an organization with ties to biotech seed companies would have good data on where that seed is planted? Further, in the online version of my piece I hyperlinked to the ASAAA website which provided the funding information you proffered; it's hardly a secret. In any event, I noticed you didn't offer any alternative crop information. It's not your style to inform, is it? You just attack.

So it was with NCFAP. True, the link you provided shows its received money from the biotech industry. But it also says it's gotten money from the USDA and the Rockefeller Foundation. In fact, that very study I cited was funded by Rockefeller, a left-wing group. Apparently your anger really dims your wits.

There was no befuddlement intended or received. The 2001 document you cite says nothing about differences in fumonisin between organic, conventional, and biotech corn. I love people who cite as authority web pages they obviously haven't bothered to read, but for your edification it states "The purpose of this guidance is to identify recommended maximum fumonisin levels that FDA considers adequate to protect human and animal health." How that contradicts anything I wrote is beyond me, but I lack those keen stinkyflower instincts.

You apparently sicken easily, but I must say from reading your letter that whatever you have is contagious. Hudson Institute is based in D.C. and has no Indianapolis connections. At one time it received money from those sources, but that money went to an adjunct organization in Virginia called the Center for Global Food Security. It did not and does not go to the D.C. office. The information in the book even predates my joining Hudson. My sole funding currently is from two philanthropies, neither of which has anything to do with biotechnology.

Actually, my entire purpose in life is to make angryflower even angrier. I'm delighted I succeeded. It will really help me sleep at night.

Sincerely,
Michael Fumento

I Failed to Read Your Article with Interest

I read your article with interest. I have been led to believe that it is mostly sexual. If not sexual - then how? You didn't really say. The speculation about puncture sources doesn't really compute in my understanding of that backward area. I have had no punctures in 35 years. Why so many there?

Interesting reading – but hard to believe!

Regards,
Clay Stiles

Dear Mr. Stiles:

I DID really say, as you acknowledged in the very next sentence when you mentioned punctures. Apparently you have no understanding of "that backward area" and are not about to let yourself be edified. So you've had no punctures in 35 years; congratulations. Do you live in Africa? Finally, I gave an extensive list of the methods by which HIV can be transmitted through punctures. Do you want me to get a court order to force you to read it?

Rich in Corruption

hatemail38.html

An all too common African "natural resource."

GREAT JOB FOR YOUR BASELESS WESTERN NEGATIVE PERCEPTION OF THE PLANET`S RICHEST CONTINENT. AS AN AFRICAN I FLATLY DISAPPROVE OF ANY INFORMATION AND STATISTICS YOU AND YOUR COLLEAGUES IN THE MEDIA ASSOCIATE WITH AFRICA

It wasn't a negative perception; it was what's called a neutral observation. You seem to have an inferiority complex in labeling your continent the "planet's richest." Actually, it's the planet's poorest – but what the heck? Certainly Africa is rich in natural resources, but unfortunately it's even richer in corrupt dictators who siphon off the money. Finally, I can't tell you how much your disapproval might bother me except that I have taken a position opposite that of the mainstream U.S. media. You can't logically disagree with both sides on this – not that that will stop you from trying.

Sincerely,
Michael Fumento

I WILL NEVER SUFFER FROM inferiority [sic] complex OF THE CONTINENT I CHERISH MOST SIMPLY BECAUSE I DO UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH THIS WORLD WOULD HAVE RUINEDLY [sic] LOOK LIKE WITHOUT THIS INDESPENSABLE [sic] CONTINENT.

DOES AFRICA`S ECONOMIC STATUS HAVE TO BE MEASURED BYU S A`S [sic] STANDARD INORDER [sic] TO BE CONSIDERED rich or poor?CERTAINLY NO. [sic] NUMERICALLY,AFRICA HAS THE LEAST NUMBER OF ''CORRUPT DICTATORS'' STILL IN POLITICAL POWER IN COMPARISM TO OTHER CONTINENTS. [sic] THE 21ST CENTURY BELONGS TO AFRICA.

I'm not saying you should suffer an inferiority complex because you're African; I'm saying you should suffer one because you're inferior. And certainly there are measurements of wealth other than economic ones, but when somebody refers to "richest" it's usually economic wealth they're talking about. I'll give you no argument if you say that the continent is rich in disease, tribal hatreds, and horrific massacres. As to your "least number" of corrupt dictators, I would certainly like to see your source on that. If the 21st Century belongs to Africa, the first decade of it certainly doesn't. Yes, the continent has terrific potential but then it always did. That potential has always been squandered by native and European governments, in great part because people like you turn a blind eye to it, just as this exchange was started because you turned a blind eye to the real causes of the African AIDS epidemic.

Sincerely,
Michael Fumento

Dear Fumento,

You are hardly either a legitimate scholar, nor are the three frauds that you mentioned. [The three frauds aren't legitimate scholars?] First of all, homosexuality in large practice ONLY happens in affluent societies. So, South Africa, Nigeria, or [sic] Egypt have a handful of wealth holders. Most African people, throughout the 54 nation [sic] continent, are still reeling from ravages of the Atlantic Slavetradimng [sic, sic] Operations [sic] and the Colonial [sic] period placed against them by Europeans during the so-called [So-called?] Nineteenth Century.

Moreover, the man who originally identified HIV as the cause of AIDS has been blackballed for more than a dozen years for recanting his earlier claim. In fact, people have AIDS who have NO HIV in their system. However, drug companies are making so much money off of this that their sycophants like you in the media continue to perpetuate this nonsense about HIV instead of finding out what really causes AIDS.

Homosexuality is big in Saudi Arabia. Why don't you write a piece about that? You won't, because you're a little racist punk who gets to use the super-racist New York Post as a forum to downgrade Black [sic] men.

Still the cause of Africa's problems?

Dear Frumpus Bumpus:

It's rather bizarre of you to claim that homosexuality is only to be found in affluent societies. Please provide data. Meanwhile, I provided information you simply ignored that it's long been widely practiced in very poor areas of Africa.

If most Africans were still reeling from an institution that ended in the 1800s and affected primarily the western part of a very large continent, it doesn't say much for them does it? And I note that you made no mention that Africans started the African slave trade among themselves, then found it more lucrative to sell to whites. Between that and colonialism, you are simply providing excuses instead of solutions. Excuses never kept anyone from becoming sick or helped a continent progress.

Two men, Robert Gallo and Luc Montagnier, have been given shared credit for discovering HIV. Neither have "recanted" their claims and neither has been blackballed for any reason. Since the definition of AIDS includes infection by HIV, your statement here is also false.

The reason I won't write about homosexuality in Saudi Arabia is because there is very little AIDS there and I write about health and science issues, touching on sexual or sociological areas only when required by my pieces. Your refusal to accept that blacks can be homosexuals doesn't make me a racist; it makes you somebody bound and determined to wear blinders no matter that because of people just like you countless people are dying. I hope you're having fun.

Sincerely,
Michael Fumento

Dear Michael,

Is there a homosexual movement in Rwanda, Somalia, or Kosovo? Think. Only in affluent societies are there so-called homosexual movement [sic].

The Atantic [sic] Slavetrading [sic] Operations [sic] began as a result of the international slave trade among Arabs and Europeans (hence the word slave from "Slav" – not Africans.

Homosexuality is a public health issue, as well as a sexual and sociological one. Additionally, I've never suggested at any point in my life that there are not Black [sic] homosexuals! You need to do more studying about who first identified HIV as the cause of AIDS.

Finally – Frumpus? You would never say that to my face – at least, not without a smile. Please do a Google search of "Djata Bumpus".

Go back and read my Scripps Howard piece:

So if vaginal intercourse can't explain the awful African epidemic, what can? Surely it's not homosexuality, since we've been told there is none in Africa. In fact, the practice has long been widespread.

For example, German anthropologist Kurt Falk reported in the 1920s that bisexuality was almost universal among the male populations of African tribes he studied. Medical records also show that African men who insist they're straighter than the proverbial arrow often suffer transmissible anorectal diseases.

I'm quite aware of the origins of the word "slave" and of slavery; you are not. The term comes to us from the ancient Greeks. Later Slavs became the slaves of Germanic tribes, hence their name. Etymology aside, what you're ignoring is that Africans were enslaving each other long before whitey came along. Only much later did they begin selling their slaves to Europeans and later Americans.

You equate, as do so many others, a "homosexual movement" or open homosexuality with the practice itself. No, I don't suppose there are a lot of gay bars in Rwanda but that hardly means there isn't a significant amount of homosexuality activity.

Finally, I did Google you. You're either a boxing coach or a former member of a group that fomented racism and wanted to overthrow the federal government, namely the Black Panthers. I assume it's the latter and if you think I'm impressed you'd better think again.

Sincerely,
Michael Fumento

Mike,

You're a funny guy. I never said that slavery didn't exist in Africa. I said that the Atlantic Slve [sic] Trade started with Europeans first.

You have no history in this country. However, by calling yourself white, you ignore your true history and form an artificial majority group. Talk about fraud.

Additionally, every single one of the entries (singer, lecturer, boxing coach, retired prizefighter, Panther) at the Google sight [sic] are only referring to me (including the Philadelphia Daily News one that puts my address as Philly). In fact, keep a watch for my upcoming play about the Black Panther Party written in book format. Moreover, the Black Panther Party did more for this country than can be imagined.

At any rate, I'll do the research about the HIV things, all over again, so that we can straighten that out clearly, since, off the top of my head, I can't remember the name of the actual guy – it wasn't the two that you mentioned, although I do recall their names in the discourse regarding the origins of the aforementioned virus.

Finally, you're, obviously, a gay guy trying to justify your malady by putting Africans in the mix. The issue remains [sic] that there is no such thing as a homosexual movement outside of affluent societies. Why is that? Homosexuals like to think of themselves as having some kind of new understanding of the human experience. Without imposing some sick child abuse, how could they reproduce themselves as a population, since cultures last for more than one genration [sic]?

Peace,
Djata

hatemail38.html

The good guys?

No, the Atlantic slave trade didn't start with the Europeans. After Africans started kidnapping each other, they found it was more lucrative to sell to Europeans than to other Africans. In Europe, the institution of slavery had died out over a thousand years earlier with the fall of the Roman Empire. It was Africans that sparked the restoration of that wretched institution. I'm not blaming you for any of this; and just because you're of African descent hardly means your ancestors dabbled in the slave trade. But let's give credit where it's due.

I know the history of both sides of my family back to the late 1800s, which isn't much but it's more than you know of it. I don't normally going around calling myself white, but it remains that for better or worse my race is Caucasian. That's a very real group, even if we can argue all day and night as to who does or doesn't belong to it. The fraud is in denying reality.

I'm sure the Black Panthers did more for this country than can be imagined because it can't be imagined it did anything for this country - nothing good, anyway. You were just a bunch of murdering, robbing, racist thugs. Some of you would come to admit it, as Eldridge Cleaver did. And some such as you glorify it. I'm every bit as impressed as if you were glorifying the German Nazi Party.

Finally, for years I was labeled a heterosexual homophobe because I said the available data and science indicated that AIDS in the U.S. was and would remain primarily a disease of homosexual males and intravenous drug users. I was also called a racist for saying that blacks and Hispanics were at much greater risk and would become even more so. Fifteen years of data, it's obvious to all that this is the case and the homophobe epithets have long since stopped. So now I found myself being called a homosexual. You have absolutely no evidence that homosexuality is only practiced in affluent societies, so you throw around epithets and accusations instead. You were pathetic when you were one of those glorious Storm Troopers, er, Black Panthers.

Sincerely,
Michael Fumento

Unfortunately, People like This Really Do Exist

Despite the U.S. government's long and well-documented history of waging chemical and biological warfare against Black [sic] people, including the infamous Tuskegee Experiment, and the hard evidence that the USA engineered the AIDS virus, many people are still in a state of denial. To review the evidence, visit www.boydgraves.com. Then visit the Environmental Justice Resource Center at Clark-Atlanta University.

Sincerely,

www.AllForReparations.org

Dear Mr. Al-Arkam:

Yes, many people are in denial. For example, the first U.S. identified AIDS case was in 1969 and the first identified case in the world was well before that. Yet you proffer evidence that it was developed beginning in 1971. A real time-travel buff, are you?

I see you also belong to the "reparations for slavery" crowd, better identified as "give me something for nothing." If there were any slaves still alive, they would certainly deserve reparations from their former masters. But insofar as slavery was abolished in this country in 1865, my guess is there aren't. You may be a slave to your prejudices, but that would simply mean you owe yourself. Nobody else owes you a penny. If you want money; work for it.

Sincerely,
Michael Fumento

God's Punishment for Flouting White Diamonds

Subject: Your articles-my echoes

Dear Micheal [sic],

Your words were mine in 1998 when a coworker complained about my white-diamond [sic] cologne. [Liz Taylor's line.] I simply wore more and ignored him.

Now... 2005... I have MCS. [I like the way the ellipses are used for melodrama.]

In 2004 I was fired for having to leave my job on several occassions [sic] due to chemical fragrances in perfumes and colognes. The reason on the termination states...

"Inability to work harmoniously with coworkers who wear cologne. You have left on several days because of this. Your absence disrupts productivity."

I'm working a contract job now, with no health or leave benefits. Many days I literally run out of the building, and it takes me 20-30 minutes just to get composed enough to drive home. Once I arrive, I'm bearly [sic] functional for hours. I don't have a social life any more... going to church is difficult... I sit in the side hall and watch the monitor.

hatemail38.html

Bearly functional.

The incident that I call my point of no return was home remodeling in 2000... tar on roof... paint... carpets...

There is no cure. [Ooh… More spine-tingling melodrama.]

I've spent thousands of dollars going to doctors.

My heart goes out for little children who can express how they feel and what causes the asthma, ADD, and every other symtom [sic] that you've called nonesense [sic].

I pray that this doesn't happen to you or any other precious person.

God bless,
J.Y. DeHart

Dear Mr. DeHart:

Don't worry about me; I'm not particularly precious. But you've been going to the wrong doctors. You need a psychiatrist or a psychologist. There is no shame in having mental illness, but there is shame in blaming the chemicals in a perfume bottle instead of a chemical imbalance in your head.

Sincerely,
Michael Fumento

I understand your ignorance, precious Michael, been there, said that.

But the fact remains, MCS is a real disease which is growing and gaining positive recognition in the medical and legal communities.

You'd better sale [sic] as many books and make as many speeches as you can, because the door of opportunity will soon shut... slam hard in your face and on your finacial [sic] gain.

Get some up to date [sic] info on increased MCS reports as a result of the 911 Twin Towers tragedy, then start writing about how mistaken your [sic] were. Hey! You can be the Asostple [sic] Paul for the MCS cause! All it takes is for you to be knocked off your high horse, by God... blinded... then see the light!

I still pray that you, nor [sic] any other precious person becomes afflicted by chemicals as I have been.

Love and blessings,
J.Y. DeHart

"Come over to the MCS side!"

I understand your mental illness, Mr. DeHart, albeit not from firsthand experience. But the fact remains there is no such disease as MCS and there is no growing recognition of it in the medical communities. As to lawyers, they'll sue over anything they think they can get a sympathetic jury to buy.

I've never written a book or given a speech concerning MCS, but you'd better send out as many idiot e-mails as you can because the door of the asylum will soon shut … slam hard in your face.

People claimed to have gotten something called "World Trade Center Cough," but there's no evidence such a thing exists. I'm sure that with all the workers who helped clear the debris and all the people who walked past it that some later developed respiratory problems; but they would have developed those anyway.

What you mean is that I can be a sell-out for the MCS "doctors" and trial lawyers and that they would probably pay me handsomely. In may well be the case that Darth Vader was right when he said it was more fun on the Dark Side. But a few of us still believe doing the right thing is more important than riches. And finally you hardly have to worry about other persons, precious or otherwise, suffering from something that doesn't exist. But tell you what, why don't you prove your own personal case and fax to me some of your medical records. [Fax number omitted]. Or does your illness prevent you from using fax machines, too?

Sincerely,
Michael Fumento

Precious Michael,

If I thought you had any intention of respectfully delving into my personal case, I'd be quick to fax factual records from 2 primary care physicians, 3 allergy specialist [sic], 1 neurologist, 1 pulmonary specialist, 2 occupational, environmental medicine specialist [Sic, most physicians who diagnose and allegedly treat MCS identify themselves as "clinical ecologists" or "specialists in environmental medicine."], 1 psychiatrist, 2 psychologist [sic], and 2 licensed counselors. I'd also send toxicology reports from the carpet, carpet glue, roofing tar, paint, and solvents.

My purpose for writing you was to give insight from someone who once scoffed at the idea of MCS as you do. I had no idea that I'd be the recipient of such an ignorant, abusive response.

You've come to the conclusion and diagnosed me and others who are sensitive to a wide array of man made chemicals as mentally ill. Your unprofessional diagnosis doesn't make the affect of man made [sic] chemical cocktails any less real.

Love and blessings,
J.Y. DeHart

Translation: You have no medical records to back up what you say. Your purpose in writing me was that you're in desperate need of a life. You complain to get attention, your sole raison d'être. I'm not going to cater to your needs anymore and thereby help perpetuate your illness. If everybody treated you as that employer so wisely did, your disease would disappear pronto. So go have one of your cocktails – and don't forget the little umbrella.

Sincerely,
Michael Fumento
